Woman pleads not guilty in killing of pro cyclist from Vermont

July 20, 2022YahooA competitive gravel and mountain bike racer and Vermont native known as Mo, Wilson had been in Austin for a race she was among the favorites to win. Police have said Wilson had previously dated Armstrongs boyfriend, cyclist Colin Strickland, who they say has cooperated with investigators and is not a suspect. According to investigators, Armstrongs SUV was seen on surveillance video outside the home where Wilson was killed. Armstrong faces up to 99 years in prison if she’s convicted. She is being held on $3.5 million bond. Prosecutors questioned whether the quick trial setting amounted to a privilege for Armstrong, as it would put her case in front of other murder trials that have waited for two years or longer because of pandemic slowdowns. They also noted that investigators are still gathering evidence that prosecutors and defense attorneys have yet to receive. If they chose to indict without evidence, thats the district attorneys problem, Armstrongs attorney, Rick Cofer, told District Judge Brenda Kennedy before she granted the request to set a trial date and scheduled it to begin Oct. 24. After the brief court hearing, Cofer suggested that Armstrongs defense will challenge the evidence gathering and conduct by Austin police investigators, and whether they didn’t follow leads that could have led to a different suspect. Ms. Armstrong wants her day in court, Cofer said, without taking questions. Simply put, there is a lot more to this story that has yet been heard.

Searching for a spot on Mass. Ave.

April 25, 2022WgbhIt was a dark and drizzly night and I was in my car going up and down a block of Massachusetts Avenue in Cambridge where a number of restaurants are clustered. I was meeting a friend for dinner so was desperately searching for a place to park. Metered parking spaces such as they are have always been somewhat limited in this area. But in addition to that, I was also challenged by changes to the street landscape Id managed to avoid until then. The parking spaces have always been flush to the curb, but now theyre on the other side of a special lane for bicyclists. And the lane is framed by short white poles I later learned are called flexible post bollards. After circling the block for at least 15 minutes, I finally nabbed a spot when someone else pulled out. These days, parking spaces in Cambridge are more valuable than Bitcoin.

Latest Proposal for TwoWay, Protected Bike Lanes on Charles Street Meets With Strong Community Response Beacon Hill Times

March 17, 2022BeaconhilltimesThe latest proposal for bike lanes on Charles Street submitted by the Boston Cyclists Union is eliciting a strong reaction from the neighborhood, with community members weighing in both strongly in favor and adamantly against the plan. The concept calls for the elimination of one of Charles Streets three traffic lanes to allow for the creation of two adjacent 4foot wide, parkingprotected, oneway bike lanes on Charles Street between Cambridge and Beacon streets. The two remaining travel lanes would each measure 10 feet wide, with a 2 foot buffer, while parking lanes on both sides of the street would each be 7 feet wide. One sidewalk would be 9 feet wide, and the other 9 feet wide. While a conceptual diagram of the proposed Charles Street bikelane configuration found on the Boston Cyclists Union website indicates that the bike lanes would be located in one of the travel lanes adjacent to the sidewalk, Alex Shames, community organizer for the group,  said the decision regarding which of the three traffic lanes would be eliminated to create the bike lanes is still in flux as the group hasnt heard back from the city yet regarding their preference.

Guest OpEd A Welcome Step Towards Waterfront Equity East Boston TimesFree Press

March 8, 2022EastietimesOver the past decade, we have watched luxury residential buildings spring up on the waterfront, stoking our communitys housing crisis. At the same time, we have witnessed streets, bike lanes, and basements flood with every major storm. Now, we are seeing the crisis caused by compounding threats of displacement hearing from numerous District 1 residents that flooding has already been wearing on their homes, and that repairs are draining their pocketbooks. Their biggest concern, however, is that this is just the beginning. As a mother with two children, living in a house half a block from the water, I share this fear myself, questioning just how long our neighborhood will resist the threats of rising sea levels and intensifying flooding. The new waterfront development in these flood zones does not make our coastline more environmentally resilient, instead, it exacerbates the threats of displacement that have been intensifying in our waterfront.
