POSTPONED UNTIL SPRING Wednesday September 20, 2023, 6:30 pm Downstairs at Redbones, Davis Square (55 Chester Street) Somerville.

Jacquie Phelan was a commuter/bike advocate before she discovered bike racing. She won her first race, was unbeaten for five years, and easily bested 90% of the men – the pack was unsegregated in the 1980s. Her old man (Charlie Cunningham) designed and built her unusual bikes.   That, along with her abiding fury about patriarchy, helped propel her successes. (Jacquie will happily accept “dough-nations” as she needs help with brain-injured  Charlie’s care).

Salem United Negro Election Day Parade

Saturday, July 15, 2023 – 12:15pm to 1:15pm, Industrial Park, 27 Congress St., Salem, MA

We are celebrating this year, after 283 years, our first celebration as a State Holiday.  In July 2022 Governor Baker signed Negro Election Day into law.  What does this day represent?  We are teaching people that it represents the first black voting system in our country.  Black enslaved men served as governors for the black community.

We were searching for Black Historical representation to be in our parade and have a vendor table to talk about the history.  I personally learnt this history myself, in the 2000’s.  I wanted to share it with people who may not know it.

I know that July 15th is around the corner. Black bicyclists are not very represented and I wanted to use my annual event and my connection to the school system to begin to expose this history.  I wanted young people to see black and brown people showing themselves in this sport.  Even during the Marathon support for this group was so negative on the news.

The Massachusett-Nipmuc ride on Native American Heritage Day

Sunday December 5th, 8:45 am, Horn Pond Parking Lot at 93 Lake Ave, Woburn, MA

The day after Thanksgiving is Native American Heritage Day [ride was originally November 26]. We will ride to South Natick in honor of the Massachusett-Nipmuc tribe.

Since ancient times they followed the seasons and roamed central and eastern Massachusetts in search of fish, clams, fowl, game, and wild plants and berries. They were decimated by disease as a result of European contact and were forced circa 1650 by the colonists to scatter or assimilate and take up a sedentary life in “Praying Towns” like South Natick from which they were gradually dispossessed.

Our ride will visit their burial place next to the Bacon Free Library in South Natick at mile 35.6. We will have coffee across the street at the Charles River Coffee House, which is built on the site of the old Bailey Hotel, a favorite meetup spot for recreational and racing cyclists in the 19th century.

Join the New England Cycling Coalition for Diversity (NECCD) for an

UnConference on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) in New England Bicycling!

6 p.m., Sunday, May 16, 2021

What is NECCD?

After the death of George Floyd, a group of cyclists decided we needed to actively help make change in the world of bicycling, a sport we love. We have formed a coalition of bicyclists and clubs to address the possibilities for greater diversity, equity and inclusion in the sport. We invite you to come help us explore this issue.

What’s an UnConference?

It’s a relaxed, non-judgmental, respectful, open-ended conversation. There’s no fixed agenda. It’s an opportunity to be together, share questions, ideas, resources, and concerns. Cyclists from around the region will talk about our own experiences with diversity and inclusion, if any, and what we’d like the future to look like. We’ll discuss everything from obstacles to models we might be able to duplicate and topics you bring to the table.

Register Today!

Come for free and without commitment to help us explore how we can achieve this goal. Invite your friends! To Register, click here. We’ll send the Zoom link to participants!

Cycling sits at the intersection of climate justice, transit justice & health justice. It should be free & accessible to everyone.
